About

Writer, editor, teacher.

I have written six plays, performed at the Royal Court, Soho Theatre and on national tour, and written for CBBC, BBC Drama, ITV’s Crossroads and BBC Radio 4.

For more than twenty years I have worked as a script editor and screenwriting tutor with writers across Europe and beyond. Whatever the project, I aim to create a supportive, generative space where you can develop your own voice.

Work with me

Where are you with your writing?

Three ways in, depending on what you need right now.

Script editing

“I have a draft, and it isn’t working yet.”

Clear-eyed, writer-friendly notes on feature films, TV pilots, short films and stage plays, from outline to final draft. I trained with USC professors David Howard and Tom Abrams, and my credits include an HBO screenplay.

Coaching for writers

“I know what I want to write. I just never get to it.”

Coaching works on your mindset, habits and the everyday obstacles that stop you finishing: creative blocks, self-doubt, a routine that lasts. I am a qualified life coach with the Coaching Academy.

One, three or five sessions · Wild at Heart writers’ days

Courses

“I want to learn how it’s done.”

I lead screenwriting courses at Depot Cinema, Lewes and Lighthouse, Brighton, have designed playwriting courses for Brighton Theatre Royal and Chichester Theatre, and teach MA and undergraduate screenwriters at the University of Brighton.

“This is a fantastic course and I’d recommend it to anyone.” Vic, course participant

Selected work · Stage

On stage, from the Royal Court to the Brighton fringe.

My plays engage with the relationship between fact and fiction and experiment imaginatively with form and structure to find the best way to tell the story.

Testimonials

What writers say.

Julie has a very fine eye and is clear-sighted, incisive, and generous about other writers’ work. She is capable of in-depth analysis and has run a range of workshops as well as being involved in story conferencing on series such as Crossroads and Down to Earth.

Mel Kenyon, Literary Agent, Casarotto Ramsay & Associates

She was the best editor I could have wished for, for myself and for my project. She can really feel and think herself into a project and give of herself generously. She will not compete with the writer for who brings the best solutions, but she will always come up with new ideas.

Jose Alders, Screenwriter, Amsterdam

Julie was an absolute pleasure to work with. She combines an extremely pleasant and writer-friendly manner with a clear vision of how to improve scripts, and incisive, constructive advice. With Julie’s help, our script developed to the point where Screen South selected it for the Los Angeles Trade Mission.

Dan & Nuria Wicksman, Screenwriters

Julie is a fantastic tutor — so warm, kind and welcoming, but most of all so knowledgeable and a great teacher. Really creative tasks and activities. Sad it’s finished!
